Managing your Prescriptions Before, During and After Deployment

Deployment is part of military life and planning to receive your medication while away from home is convenient and secure through the TRICARE Home Delivery Deployment Prescription Program (DPP).

Here are commonly asked questions about the Deployment Prescription Program:

How can I get my prescriptions while deployed?

The Deployment Prescription Program (DPP) is a fast and secure way to get your medications and refills through TRICARE Home Delivery when you’re deployed. If you are a Deployed Service Member, a TRICARE-eligible deployed contractor, or a TRICARE-eligible civil service employee you can fill your prescription(s) through the DPP. Find out if you are eligible and what limitations or restrictions you should be aware of here.

How do I get started prior to deployment?

Create or log in to your Express Scripts account. Remember to use the email address you plan to access while deployed. Once logged in, update your mailing address to your deployment Army Post Office (APO), Fleet Post Office (FPO), or Diplomatic Post Office (DPO) address. Your medication will be delivered to the address on file.

Ask your provider for two copies of your prescriptions for up to a 180-day supply.[1]

  • The first prescription will be filled at your pre-deployment military pharmacy, so you have your medication available when you deploy. Your provider must also complete a pre-deployment prescription form to enroll you in home delivery.
  • Ask your provider to send the second prescription to TRICARE Home Delivery[2] so your refills can be mailed wherever you are deployed.[3]

What do I need to do while deployed?

Keep your personal information up to date to avoid delays in receiving your medication or important notices. The average shipping time is about 3-4 weeks. A reminder email is sent 60 days into your deployment to update your Express Scripts online account with your deployed mailing address (APO/FPO/DPO).

Update your deployed mailing address by signing in to your account online or in the free Express Scripts® Pharmacy Mobile App. Under Account, select the information you wish to update from the drop-down menu. You can update your mailing address, email address, and other personal information.

How can I order a refill of my medication while deployed?

Each refill request of your medication(s) must be ordered through your Express Scripts online account or through the Express Scripts® Pharmacy Mobile App. Under Prescriptions, add eligible prescriptions to your cart. Follow the prompts to check out. If you do not receive an email from Express Scripts within 60 days of arriving at the theater, please contact the Express Scripts Deployment Prescription Program Team at the following numbers: Call 1-855-215-4448 or 1-480-438-8344, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How can I keep using TRICARE Home Delivery after deployment?

  • Use the Express Scripts® Pharmacy Mobile App or visit militaryrx.express-scripts.com to switch eligible medications to home delivery.
  • Ask your provider to submit your prescription electronically (e-Prescribe) or fax your prescription to Express Scripts.
  • Call (877) 363-1303 and have your prescription bottle ready. A patient care advocate will work with your doctor to transfer your prescription to home delivery.

You can contact the DPP team by email or at 855.215.4488. Learn more about how the DPP works.

[1] Medications requiring refrigerated packaging (ice medications) and/or have pressurized dispensing devices will not be shipped to APO/FPO/DPO addresses through the DPP.

[2] Control medications may not be available up to a 180-day supply. If you are a deployed contractor or civilian service employee eligible for TRICARE, your medications may be limited to a 90-day supply, and a copayment will apply. Learn more about drug limitations and restrictions here.

[3] German customs laws prohibit receiving and shipping certain items, including medications, through the mail. Medical supplies, such as diabetic test strips, pump supplies, and/or syringes, are not affected by this prohibition. Due to USPS mailing restrictions, Express Scripts is unable to ship medications to Saudi Arabi.
